Aiptek A-HD 720p 8 MP CMOS High-Definition Camcorder (Black) CustomerReview

I have had this camera for about two years. I bought it to be a knockabout camera for daily snapshot use, and as such it’s proven to be “The Little Camera That Could”. I’ve taken thousands of pictures with it. I’ve dropped it, splashed it with salt water, left it recording for hours, used it as a video recorder using the output from a better camera, frozen it, fell on it, let my 10 year old and her friends play with it, strapped it to helmets, and subjected it to countless other abuses over the time that I’ve had it. The only time that it ever gave me a problem was when I completely submerged it in salt water. Aiptek replaced it for free, no questions asked. It’s outlasted my Nikon Coolpix point and shoot camera that I got at almost the same time.

The video quality is good, but is a bit overcompressed. It looks great on a big screed Hi-Def television, but tends to look fuzzy on a computer monitor. I can edit the footage with no problem in iMovie, but it has to render in Final Cut Express before I can do anything with it.

The still photos look very good for snapshots, but don’t use the camera for landscapes, the cheesy optics lose resolution (get fuzzy) with objects that are more than 100 feet away. There is also a slight yellow cast to the images, something that is easily fixed in iPhoto or other editing software.

There is a large element of “you get what you pay for” with this camera. It feels flimsy, The optics stink compared to a Sony or Canon. The audio is a little bit muddy, but only when you compare it to a better piece of equipment. The digital zoom is useless. Sometimes the rolling shutter effect, where the bottom of the picture lags behind the top, can be seen when following fast moving objects, although I’ve heard the same complaint about the ,500 Canon 5D Mark II.

All that said, I love this little camera, and wouldn’t hesitate to buy other Aiptek products based on the service this one’s given me.

I produce a weekly Internet TV show that is shot against a green screen. I bought one of these cameras to try it out and have fallen in love with it. It does exactly what I’m after and is a huge improvement over using MiniDV tapes and SD resolution. Very surprising…

Great Camcorder for the Price! – ThisOnePlease –
This is a fantastic camera, particularly for such a great price. It does a fantastic job at recording at 720p, and it has built in standard resolution modes for things like DVDs, or the web, so you just pick the one you want – very handy. I read a couple of reviews about these types of cameras that say that it is hard to stabilize the picture without a tripod – I don’t know what they are talking about. The video is very stable, no jittering at all. The menus are easy to navigate, it is light and fits well in your hand, and the screen is great and can be moved around so you still see what you are shooting no matter what the angle. It records in low light very well. Great extra features like video out, HD video out, audio visual in (so you can record from a tv, gamebox or other source). It comes with all the cables you would need for any of the options. And as for being well-made – our kitten got hold of it (he liked the little handstrap) and ran it around the house, banging into walls and such, and it still works great, not a scratch on it. The only drawback is the sound – it needs a foam cover on it or something because it picks up sound almost too well – there is no filter. I would definitely recommend this!

The price is excellent and if you understand you get what you pay for you won’t be dissapointed…
It does’t have a lot of features, but that’s what makes it great, it’s just really simple.

Open the display and press record to sart/stop! That’s exactly what I wanted and that’s what I got in this handy device…

With good lighting it has crisp video recording and the mic works pretty good too…

With a 4gig flash card we get 120 minutes of video… I wouldn’t recommend a flash card bigger than 4gig since the battery doesn’t hold past 90 minutes with average use…

I’d also recommend making short clips (2-5 minutes) even if the event you’re recording is longer than that. Files get big fast and easier to author a DVD if clips are already parsed.

The camera starts up quickly and recording is near instant from the press of the button…

Aiptek could have saved time and not installed the flash and camera feature… It’s not that great unless you don’t want to carry a 2nd ‘real’ camera around. But handy sometimes when you just want to snap a picture of something you want to remember later…

Overall, I would recommend it and looking at getting one of their higer end models in the future…

Wow, I should have bought less stuff in general and bought better stuff! I decided to take the plunge and buy this, the last of the great SD camcorders, because I wanted to get good video of indoor events, like birthday parties, Christmas mornings, and weddings.

I just recorded my first wedding with this unit. It was performed in a converted barn with the light so low that candles were placed along the aisle for ambiance. There was also some narrow, small and bright track lights about two thirds of the way toward the ceiling and on either side.

I cranked the gain up to +12 just so I could see everything through the LCD monitor, shot the wedding, and hoped for the best.

Well, now I’m watching it and there’s not graininess and the colors are accurate. It’s like I’m right back there. I’m sure no consumer grade unit could have pulled this off.

Sure, the learning curve is a bit steeper, but it’s not bad. There are likely features you’ll never use, and it is possible to damage the unit if you don’t know what you’re doing, so it’s a good idea to really study the manual when you first get it. And by all means get an external microphone. It makes a huge difference.

I’ve used this camera for 3 years and it has not failed me. With its 3 ccd chips, picture quality is outstanding. The ability to save presets is practical, and the camcorder offers multifarious choices for the versatile types of shots one would like to achieve. The film also shows decent performance in lower light situations by the dvx.
I’m moving on to hd, but I really don’t think there are better sd cameras out there that offer true 24p/30p at such high quality picture. The only possibly negative thing is the mic, but almost all internal mics on camcorders aren’t that good anyway.
Overall, highly recommended. Excellent gains for the price.

Now, some individuals will try to convince you the XL2 is a poor Prosumer camcorder and will give seemingly good arguments. Don’t buy into it.

For instance, a reviewer lower down this page complains the camera arrived broken and thus reviews it as a horrible machine. Unfortunately, this said reviewer doesn’t talk about the actual functionality of an actual undamaged product, rather his own broken camera. Needless to say, his opinion is vastly slanted.

Another compares the XL2 to the DVX100 series from Panasonic and prefers the latter. He states the XL2 is too heavy and doesn’t achieve the same calibre results as the cheaper Panasonic camcorder.

First of all, Canon has continued to revolutionize the photography industry for decades. They have proven themselves in both film and digital formats, for both still camera and camcorder. True, the XL2 lacks some features other more expensive cameras have (compare the JVC GU1000) but that’s okay. And, yes, the camera has a very large body and is definately heavier than the Panasonic DVX100, but this is for specific reasons.

You have to first consider why you want a prosumer camcorder. If you just want to shoot hobby short films and want a professional look, I suggest you stick with either the higher-end Canon or JVC or Panasonic or even Sony (god forbid) consumer camcorders which run around 0. On the other hand, if you’re considering becoming a serious hobbyist and don’t intend to turn it into some sort of profession then Panasonic’s DVX series is a good buy. The DVX 100′s are cheaper, smaller, and somewhat easier to use. They are far more “point-and-shoot” than the other prosumer camcorders on the market. And they do a fairly good job.

Yet, the XL2 manages to not only hold its own, but also triumph over all other camcorders in the industry. First and foremost, the XL2 has the option to change lenses. This is a great boon for any serious shooter because attaching an actual lens to a camera gives far better results than slapping on some sort of adapter, which distort the image. Canon offers two lens types for the XL2: the included 20X zoom lens and a 3X wide angle lens; both are very expensive by themselves. But, with an optional Canon ring adapter running for 0, you could take your normal Canon SLR still camera lenses and attach them to the body and have them function perfectly. This allows the user a plethora of imaging options when shooting. Now, the normal user won’t ever use anything other than the 20X zoom lens (a remarkable piece of machinery in itself), but that’s just fine. You’re buying the camera for its options and potentials as well as the physical benefits. Think of it like buying a BMW: you buy the car for its physical features you’re likely to use (the radio, heated seats, leather, sunroof, etc.) but you also buy it for its safety and cumstomer service, things you’ll hardly ever need. It just makes you feel good you have those options available.

Furthermore, the XL2 is a wonderful camera. It shoots beautifully without problems of any sort. Yes, it takes some getting used to, but that’s because it has a lot of fuctions and options. The physical body design is simple enough that all the necessary shooting options (i.e., 24P, 30i, 60i, mic adjustments, white balance controls, presents, etc.) are easily accessible. The end product of a regular shoot is stunning. The Canon lens captures colors almost perfectly and the image stabilization built into the camera is a great help. The large body design (though awkward for some) is actually a benefit. The camera can be placed on the shoulder, giving greater stability to the shoot. You can’t do that with a Panasonic or Sony.

No, the camera doesn’t have a LCD screen on the side, but do you really need one? An LCD screen is not only distracting but also a battery hog, and takes precious room for control options or accessories that could other wise be placed where the LCD is built in. An LCD is great for consumer cameras because they’re small and nobody wants to look through those one-inch viewfinders. But the XL2 has a very nice, large color viewfinder, and can be comfortably used with the camera on your shoulder. For those running hand-held shots you can flip part of the viewfinder open and can see a 1.5″ LCD display. It’s not dazzling or great, but it gets the job done. You’re out in the field to get footage, not admire the LCD screen.

Finally, the XL2 offers XLR microphone inputs, a big bonus for people who want good sound in their video. You won’t find this feature in either Panasonic or Sony prosumer camcorders.

In the end, Canon’s XL2 is a beautiful camcorder. It offers you a lot more than you know at first glance, and delivers near-perfect results. The closest competitor would be the far more expensive (by at least 00) Panasonic GU1000, which is very similar to the XL2. If you’re still not sure about the camera, I suggest you take a ride down over to your nearest Fry’s to experiment. Or, you can visit the local TV station and ask them to tell you a little bit about why they’re all using XL2′s over the other camcorders on the market. No…seriously…they are.

Go figure.

People ask for my business card often because they assume I’m a pro just by using it. Or they ask, what TV station I work for. There are lots of add-ons to consider owning. Its not High Definition but who needs it? I take it everywhere. Just remember you will eventually need a good travel case,a wind screen, extra batteries, a heavy-duty professional tripod and additional lenses to complete your experience. The camera is a bit heavy(as I expected) and takes some getting used to…….but wow, its worth it ! The sound you get is great. I just bought some wireless microphones for my XL2. I’m glad I own it.

I have used this for a year at my college. I do not know why some people dislike it. I love it! and on my opinion, It is the closest to HD your gonna get while not getting HD. You guys gotta realize that this camera has shot some big movies like Cold Mountian. I must say though the panasonic dvx100b is quite comparable, because I have used that too. But I like this camera I do not care what people say about it. It is so customizable that you will be surprised when you mess around with it’s advance functions. nice camera, a little pricey, but all in all it’s more professional than some other people say.

  Canon VIXIA HF R10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (Black) – 2010 MODEL CustomerReview

  I wanted a high definition camcorder at a decent price. This one is very good. Excellent quality. But be prepared to spend a good deal of time learning how to use it. I am advanced when it comes to electronics and this device is a challenge. The interface is a joystick and a button and took me a while to get the hang of it. The user’s manual is somewhat helpful but not well written. There are little gotchas here and there. I am still trying to get up to full speed. The separate microphone plug requires a mic with its own power supply; so something else to buy.

  Now as to the Pixela ImageMixer that comes with the camera. The worst piece of software I have seen in over a decade, certainly not up to 2010 standards. I will soon have a better application to transfer, edit and render my videos. Do not buy this camera because you think the software that comes with it is worth anything at all. I have not found any use for the application.

  Last comment: I am still not sure that all of the features of the camera work yet. It just takes some time to learn how to access and utilize some of them.

Generally, though, this is a good 1080 HD camcorder for enthusiasts. The nub control stick for navigating menus– oddly not found on the higher-end model– works well (better than the more expensive version’s touch screen) and the whole thing feels solid while still light-weight.

  Small and functional with excellent video results. Two problems: when recording the microphone is under the starp and thus covered by one’s hand–hence hardly any sound is recorded; and the software that comes with it to transfer and edit video clips onto the computer is highly confusing and dysfunctional, making it almost impossible to record on DVD and to share. The camcorder arrived with a mal-functioning lens cover!

  

  Awesome Camera – Ken –
  The camera performs just as I thought it would with the HD quality. The camera is small, light weight and for such a small camera has a great zoom factor. I have not played with it enough in a quite room to notice if it is recording camera motor funtions but the manual does state that could be a problem and to order a remote mic.

  Just a note this same camcorder at over priced Best Buy is 549 compared to 343.

  The camcorder is fairly new and have not used it tremendously but so far so good.

Canon VIXIA HV40 HD HDV Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom – 2009 MODEL CustomerReview

I recently used the Canon VIXIA HV40 as a second camera alongside the Sony HDR-HC7 (as well as a Sony HVR-Z5U) in a documentary and ended up being a little disappointed with the image quality when compared to the HC7. I had originally used this camera for some test footage and thought the picture quality pretty good, but once I used it side-by-side with the HDR-HC7 the differences were readily apparent in the field even before I captured the footage into Final Cut where it became even more noticeable. In actuality, the Sony HDR-HC7 ended up outclassing it; where it was very obvious which footage came from the Canon VIXIA HC40 when compared to the Sony HVR-Z5U footage, the Sony HDR-HC7 actually compared up very nicely with the Z5 and was very hard to tell the difference from the footage.

So while the Canon VIXIA HV40 is a very good HDV camera for the price, I would suggest that you get the now Sony HDR-HC9 if you can afford the 50% bump in price as it will deliver video that performs much closer to a camera three times is price.

Pretty Much a great camera for the money – Michael Chambers –
This camera is a really great camera, for the money. I would recommend it to a novice filmmaker, because you can build upon this camera, and create pretty stunning video. The still camera is not that great, but that is something this camera wasn’t made for. All around, great product!

Sticking with MiniDV – EJ –
I read all the reviews on this camcorder before buying it. I like the MiniDV format. I have a lot of tapes and would like to read them to disk in the near future. I like recording stuff from other analog sources. I am not going to write everything everyone else already wrote. I LOVE THIS CAMCORDER! The best thing I can say about it is that my technology-averse wife picked it up, recorded some video in a darkly lit room, and the video looks great. She is happy and so am I. The quality drops at a certain darkness but overall, the quality of the video is great and the camcorder is easy to use. If you are anything other than a professional videographer, this is the camcorder for you.

The Canon VixiaHV40 is an excellent high performance HD camcorder.
While not the easiest to use at first, it provides a quality typically found in higher end cameras. According to a friend of mine who is a cameraman, this is the same camera used by Reality Shows.

The shipper was great and very timely. Delivered on time and in great condition for a used camera.

The miniSD was a challenge to find in brick/mortar stores. Go online for both the SD Card and the DVDtapes.

It is important to understand what you are buying when you purchase a camcorder (that’s how much it was when I bought it). It will not compare to a 9 camcorder! So I gave it 4 stars, because as long you hold still, it takes very good photos and videos and is packed with features for a crazy low price. The sound quality is great, never an issue there. We bought both of our kids one for Christmas and they adore them. That’s really what this camera is ideal for I think… for kids or for capturing little events to throw on youtube.

My wife and I bought this unit along with a spare battery and CaseLogic case for our honeymoon in Europe. It went with us everywhere for 11 days in pockets and strapped to wrists. In the process, it got banged around a lot and rained on, and never had any issues. It was always there for us and started right up in 2 seconds or less; we never missed anything. We read reviews and accordingly set it to 720p, 60 frames per second. We bought 2 16GB class 6 SDHC cards for it and each one lasted for about 3 hours 50 minutes at these resolution settings. The video looks amazing! So much so that my home PC doesn’t have anough power to play it smoothly without caching. The only very minor gripe I would share about this unit is that the battery only lasts about 50 minutes if you leave it on and frequently start and stop recording, which you probably will at an event, etc. Buy a spare battery! We got a wide range of stuff, from the Lippizaner Stallions in Vienna to the beerhalls at Oktoberfest, and everything looks like it was shot on a pro movie camera. Obviously, we avoided a lot of low-light situations since this beast has no flash, but it did well on lit objects at night like cathedrals, clock towers, etc. Oh, and I also pre-emptively put a small piece of GPS protective screen film on the screen before the trip, so I can’t speak to the other reviews of the screen scratching easily. HIGHLY recommend this unit. At this price it can’t be touched, and I’m glad we used it so our memories are so perfect of our trip.

This is a very good camcorder for the price. My issue is that if there is no direct sunlight, the picture is grainy even though it’s a HD camcorder. I’m not sure if this is a common issue with the camcorders but it’s enough for me to take down one star from my rating.

This Video Camera is great for parents that need to keep a video and digital camera handy at all times. You never know when you child will do something cute or funny that you want to capture. It is in my bag all the time. I haven’t had it long enough to really make it do anything special, but it is easy to use, light weight and great to have handy. It is with me wherever I go with my daughter. Highly recommended.
